A Happy Worker.
I think that the notion of the Human Relations Approach to management is one of the most practical ideals that we have learned so far in this course. For me it is a no brainer. A worker who feels that he is a valued part of a team will always work harder and contribute to the company more than a person who feel that he is just a mindless drone who is easily replaceable. That feeling of team is what will drive an employee to put in a few extra hours without pay or go that extra step to make sure that his proposal is top notch because for him it is something that he is a part of, not something that he is working for. To make a sports comparison, a player who cares about his team and loves being a part of it will always play harder than a player who cares only about himself and not the team as a whole.

Good views on employee satisfaction and productivity. Working in large companies and organizations, you can see how successful managers and non successful managers are working with their teams. Successful managers know how to communicate to his or her employees with motivational and positive conversations. When I make a mistake at work my boss would motivate me and tell me what I still did right then tell me how to improve but he would use the old fashion method of lecturing me and I appreciated that.
ReplyDeleteAt my last job, I was at the entry level, even though I had significant (for my industry) experience. Because of this, I wasn't a proud of my work as I could have been. While I was at this job, there was a promotion available, and I wanted to get it to feel that I had some ownership over the place where I worked. If I had gotten it, I know I would have worked harder and been more interested in the job. I found it strange that the book mentions there is no correlation between worker ownership and productivity, until I finished reading nickel and dimed. The author noted that even though the workers felt they had no stake in the company and were treated badly, they took pride in their work as an expression of themselves. While feel that unless I have a stake in the company or agree with the ideals, I don't work as hard, it makes sense as a form of self expression.
