Chapter 2

I think that this chapter really does make you think of the word "Theory". In grade school, you are introduced to the word as "An educated guess", but when you read this chapter the word takes on another light. Now the word theory evokes thoughts of stories or tales in which the person reading gains insight and ultimately is presented with a notion that though can't be fully proven is still relevant and probable. It basically takes the concept of a “an educated guest” and really takes it one step further.

  1. I hope that in grade school the emphasis was on the "educated" part and on the "guess" part. Theory development is based on gathering data, making observations, testing hypothesis, and exploring research questions to determine the theory's explanatory value. Theories are never fully proven, but scholars do amass a body of work that supports--or doesn't support--the tenets of the theory.
